Activities

This assignment, while the simplest in terms of its directions, requires a level of creativity and collaboration built from the foundation of the previous three assignments. In "Remediating" one of their peers' prior works into a new modality, each student must not only engage with the voice and thoughts of a different individual, they must also engage in a dialogue of interpretations with the original creator. This assignment, like the others, is conducted anonymously, so unless they seek confirmation on their own, students will not know whose work they are engaging with. Only at the final presentation of the remixed project will the original author be able to critique and engage with what might be a completely different take on their work. Students should be encouraged to consider not only how they approached their remix, but why.

• Assign the students a random essay from a random student from the earlier sequence (if they are given their own essay, that’s also fine) and have them Remediate it into a multimodal project. It can be a website, a timeline, a lecture or any other form. The students must submit a proposal outlining their choices and discuss their ideas both online and in an individual conference.

• The student must, at the end of the sequence, present their project to the class and explain their process and choices.

• Have both the student and the student whose paper they were assigned write a short reaction to the piece, discussing what it was like to work with a different person’s work, how modality affected the project, and how the original author reacted to the reinterpretation of their project.

Finally, at the project's conclusion, the students should write a short reflection on their reaction to this assignment. How did it feel to have their work altered by somebody else? Were they angered by the loss of ownership? Surprised at the direction it took? How might they approach a similar topic in the future, having seen it through somebody else's point of view?
